In some cities, I pull myself together. In Lisbon, though, I sometimes do the opposite and loosen my inner fist a little. I do not lose my caution — I simply stop living as if the whole world wants something from me right this second. And that was exactly why certain things I would never have dared anywhere else happened to me here almost naturally.
1. I Loosened My Grip on Everything
In Lisbon, I let myself move through the city with a little less armor. I slowed down. I looked around more. I stopped treating every unknown as a possible threat or every unplanned moment as something to control.
That may sound small, but for me it was not. In many cities, I stay sharp by default. In Lisbon, I realized I could stay aware without holding myself so tightly. I could walk more slowly, notice more, breathe more deeply, become curious enough to try, and open enough to let small, unexpected moments become part of my life.

I wrote a little more about that softer side of the city here: 3 Lisbon gardens I escape to for a quick reset.
2. I Said Yes to a Moment I Had Not Planned
I came to Lisbon to open a company for my experience-tech startup, so that day was supposed to be practical. Administrative. Useful, maybe — but not memorable.
Instead, while waiting in line, I met someone who works with entrepreneurs from different countries. By the end of that same day, he had invited me for a glass of wine at Sud Lisboa with a lovely French couple who run a recording studio and organize music events.
It was one of those very Lisbon moments: unexpected, warm, a little glamorous, and somehow completely natural. For the first time, I spoke about my project in a completely relaxed, beautiful atmosphere — and received real feedback, useful insight, and genuine enthusiasm.
The idea itself did not change that evening, but something in the way I held it did. At the time, I did not yet realize that this small, accidental evening would stay with me as one of the first real sources of momentum for the long road ahead.

3. I Spoke Sincerely With People I Had Never Known — and Found Real Support
One of the most unexpected things Lisbon gave me was the feeling that a conversation with a stranger did not always need a future in order to matter.
I had moments here when I ended up talking to someone on a nearby bench as if we had known each other for years. No agenda. No performance. No attempt to impress, sell, persuade, or turn the moment into something useful. Just two people talking for as long as the moment asked for.
Some of those conversations disappeared as quickly as they arrived. Others stayed with me much longer.
In one of them, I found real support at a moment when I truly needed it. In others, I realized I had something to give back too — not anything grand, just a few sincere words or a perspective that felt honest enough to matter.
Lisbon made this kind of brief human closeness feel possible — and that, too, felt like a small act of courage.
*Of course, not every stranger deserves your openness. These moments can be beautiful, but staying alert still matters.

Looking back, none of these things were dramatic on the surface.
But Lisbon made certain small shifts feel possible.
That may be one of the things I trust most about this city: it does not force transformation. It simply makes certain versions of me feel easier to try on.
And sometimes, that is more than enough.
Have you ever found yourself doing something in Lisbon you do not think you would have dared anywhere else?
